How I Got a Free $200

Do you see that big beautiful check?  Do you remember when I asked your opinion as to whether or not I should sign up for a credit card for the $200 sign up bonus?  I wasn’t going to but the comments that were left encouraged me to do it.  Plus I thought it would be fun to write about the experience.  Well guess what?!  I got my check earlier this week!  $200 baby!

I posted the first article on May 13th.  To the get bonus I had to make one transaction on the card, which I did on May 24th.  I spent $7 at Krispy Kreme.  I didn’t try to get the money as quick as I could.  I waited for the statement to arrive, which did show the bonus points from my required purchase.  I sent my payment and waited for it to clear before requesting my check.  I didn’t want them to have any reason not to send me the check.

Once the payment cleared I called customer service to ask for a check.  It was easier than I thought.  I figured there would be some kind of red tape.  I thought that in order to get the full $200 I would have to take it as a statement credit or gift card.  But that wasn’t the case.  As you can see I got the full $200 in a check.  And I didn’t even have to talk to a person.  I was able to request it in the automated system.  It took about a week or so to arrive.  Over all, the whole thing took about two months from applying for the card to receiving the check.  Not to bad… for free money.

So what am I going to do with it?

It’s going to partially fund my trip to the Financial Bloggers Conference.  Wohoo!  Since I had zero dollars set aside for this trip when I bought my tickets I’m scrounging money for it.  The trip is the perfect thing to spend this little windfall on.  I probably wouldn’t have it if it weren’t for the blog so I think it’s a good fit.

You actually had to request the $200? They didn’t just send it to you? Well, I guess making a phone call for $200 isn’t too bad. Maybe they are hoping you’d forget. If you’re like me at all – FAT chance! :-)

I just earned (but haven’t yet received) $200 for opening a checking account with Capital One….and $126 at ING for opening a checking account, doing a couple of debit card transactions and a couple of direct deposits.

I know that some people think it’s silly (or some even say dishonest but I STRONGLY disagree with that) to take advantage of these promotions….let’s face it: $326 isn’t going to make my day, week, month, or year. But it’s free money and I am organized enough that I will make darn sure it doesn’t cost me anything!

Honestly, I keep my eye out for these types of promotions and have found them to be excellent! And I know they don’t dare renege on the terms because if they did, the word would definitely get around.

Yes I had to call and ask for it. They might send it automatically after a set amount of time, like a year or something, I don’t know. but I do know I didn’t want to wait for it.

Awesome, sounds like an easy $200!

Glad you’re using it to go to FINCON11. I just booked my plane tickets last night!

Nice job on the $200. I miss Krispy Kreme…this is the only time I can drink black coffee because the donuts are so sweet.

Congrats on your check. I love the Chase Freedom credit card. I use it like a debit card but instead I make money off it. I pay if off every month and enjoy the cash back benefits. :) I recently posted an article with a link to apply for the card and get the same $200 bonus. :)
