Job Transition

My family is going through a small job transition right now. If there is such a thing. My husband’s company got bought out by another company. While there are much more stressful things that could happen on the job front it’s still not fun to go through this transition. There are a lot of questions. Will the salary be the same? Will the hours be the same? What type of benefits do they have? Will they even keep the old staff?
They told him on Friday before our Thanksgiving trip up to Wyoming. So the trip had this undertone of stress wondering when we will hear something and what that something will be.
When we got back to town my husband got an offer letter for the same salary from the new company. So that was a relief. The problem was that the offer didn’t specify if they pay over time or not. It alluded to the fact that they do NOT pay overtime. Which is a huge problem since about 30% of my husband’s annual salary comes from overtime.
So are we going to have to deal with a 30% income drop?
Then, while everyone was freaking out about the overtime issue the company rescinded all the offers saying the transition to the new company is going to take longer than they thought. They said they will make new offers when they are ready. Hopefully those new offers will include overtime! But now we don’t have an official offer at all.
Another problem is that their health insurance plan is super expensive! $600 a month for the family plan which is about triple our current health insurance costs. So I’ve been shopping around for private plans and I can definitely save us some money there. Save being a relative term since it will still be much more expensive than we were paying with the old company. I’ll have an article about that experience coming up soon.
I was hoping the new company would have a decent 401(k) match but I was disappointed. They have a 401(k) but no match. So that’s a bummer.
I’m not complaining, I’m glad my husband will probably keep his job. That’s the most important thing. It’s just crazy how you can be going along minding your own business and BOOM everything changes.

Ugh. Bummer. My hubby’s going through the same thing right now, but a lot of the perks will remain the same for the foreseeable future. I hope it all works out on your front!
